Spain Sees Tourism Boost as Travelers Shun Gulf Hubs Amid Middle East Concerns

MADRID – Spain is poised to benefit from a surge in tourism this spring and summer as travelers increasingly avoid transfer hubs in the Middle East due to ongoing conflict and rising airfares. The shift is prompting airlines to launch a wave of new routes to Spanish destinations, catering to holidaymakers seeking safer and more accessible travel options.
The disruption in air travel, stemming from limitations at major Gulf airports like Dubai and Doha, coupled with flight cancellations by European carriers due to the Middle East crisis and increased jet fuel costs, is driving demand for alternative destinations. Spain, with its established infrastructure and perceived stability, is emerging as a prime beneficiary.

Several airlines are expanding their services to and from Spain. From Madrid, Iberia will begin daily flights to Newark Liberty International Airport on March 29th, while Delta Airlines will launch daily services to Boston starting May 16th. Plus Ultra Líneas Aéreas will connect Madrid with Buenos Aires from May 23rd. Budget carrier Volotea will also add a twice-weekly route between Madrid and Lille, France, beginning in May.
Barcelona is also seeing significant expansion. Delta will offer new routes to both Seattle (three weekly flights starting in May) and Boston (daily flights beginning May 7th). Aeromexico will launch six weekly flights to Mexico City starting March 28th, and Wizz Air will operate daily flights to London Luton, with increased frequencies on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. Condor will connect Barcelona and Frankfurt with three daily flights starting May 1st, while Norwegian will offer two weekly flights to Billund, Denmark, from April 1st to October 24th. easyJet will begin flights from Reus to Newcastle, UK, on March 31st.
Valencia is also benefiting from the trend, with Finnair launching flights to Helsinki (two flights per week from April 11th to October 24th), Ryanair connecting the city with Rabat, Morocco (twice weekly from March 31st to October 24th), and Wizz Air adding a route to London Luton (four weekly flights starting March 29th). Volotea will also operate flights between Valencia and Lille.
Further south, Seville will gain new connections to Lille (Volotea, starting in May) and London Luton (Wizz Air, starting March 29th). From Alicante, Austrian Airlines will launch a twice-weekly service to Vienna from March to October.
Even the Canary Islands are seeing increased connectivity, with Norwegian Air launching a weekly flight from Gran Canaria to Billund on March 30th, and Jet2 launching a new route from La Palma to Manchester on April 3rd.
Finally, Santiago de Compostela will be connected to New York by United Airlines (three times a week starting May 28th) and to Marrakech by Vueling (starting March 27th). Bilbao will gain flights to Vienna (Austrian Airlines) and London Luton (Wizz Air), while Santander will be connected to Tirana, Albania, by Wizz Air starting March 29th.
