Hardline Ex-Revolutionary Guard Named to Key Iranian Security Post

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Mohammad Baqer Zolqadr, a former commander of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, has been appointed secretary of the Supreme National Security Council (SNSC), Iran’s top security body, state media reported Tuesday. The appointment comes after the death of Ali Larijani, who was killed in recent U.S.-Israeli strikes.

President Masoud Pezeshkian’s office announced Zolqadr’s appointment, according to reports from Presstv.ir and other news outlets.

Zolqadr’s selection signals a potential hardening of Iran’s security posture. The SNSC plays a critical role in shaping Iran’s domestic and foreign policies, particularly regarding its nuclear program and regional alliances.

The appointment is being closely watched internationally, given ongoing tensions in the Middle East and the evolving security landscape following Larijani’s death. The SNSC is responsible for coordinating Iran’s security and foreign policy strategies, making Zolqadr a key figure in navigating these complex challenges.
