Réal Béland will be back on the CASA channel starting Thursday with his new show Réal débarque in which he will help people with their DIY projects.
After Réal dans mes rénos and Papa marteau, the comedian will now visit hardware stores in search of renovation projects to do at people’s homes.
“It’s like a networking event, but it takes place in a hardware store,” explains the theme song at the end of each episode.
Whether it’s a laundry room, a playroom, or a backyard, anything is possible for him and his team, including designer Daphné Morin and entrepreneur Martin Labonté.
“If a project interests me, we go directly to [the person’s] house to assess the work. If it works for everyone, we lend a hand for a day and try to create a room with them for about $2000,” explained Réal Béland to Agence QMI.
The participant can also contribute to the project fund if they wish, he added.
As a woodworking enthusiast and a lover of “real people,” the host-renovator feels right at home in this new format that he developed himself and that suits him perfectly.
“I love manual labor. On my mother’s side, everyone was a carpenter. I worked in construction when I was studying. And in a show like this, with real people, I feel completely in my element,” he said.
The idea for Réal débarque had been in the works for a while, the comedian revealed in an interview. However, it was put on hold for the production of Papa marteau, a show in which he, along with the rest of his family, helped his eldest daughter Charlotte build her house in the Laurentians.
It was during his frequent visits to hardware stores that the idea came to him. “I already know hardware stores inside out. The people who are there are often very interesting, they have projects and they are happy,” he added.
Refinements along the way
While filming the show, the team realized that the time between the first meeting and the actual work was sometimes too short. They adjusted along the way and added an extra day for shopping and conceptualization.
“Initially, we were supposed to go to the participant’s house the next day, but we decided to give ourselves a day in between to allow Daphné to do more shopping, especially with out-of-stock items. It also allows us to go to another location when something is missing,” explained the comedian.
He also mentioned that some projects during the season required more than one day to complete.
Return to radio and a touring phase
Réal Béland will return to radio this fall in Les spéciaux du midi on 96.9 CKOI with Neev and Marjorie Vallée. “It’s the dream schedule for an old man, we don’t wake up too early and we don’t finish too late,” he joked.
The comedian will also begin the touring phase of his new show, Comme chez nous, which he will continue to test for the next year and a half. This show will feature more stand-up, but also some of his classics, like the famous Mr. Latreille.
In fact, viewers will be able to see the iconic character come to life on TVA this winter, right after the holidays, in a one-hour special titled M. Latreille en présentiel. During the show, the comedian will start his routines with a phone call, as he usually does on stage, and then fully transform into his character to finish the call in person.
Réal débarque will be broadcast on CASA starting this Thursday at 9 p.m.
