Nuki annonce l’arrivée de Matter dans sa gamme de serrures connectées

Nuki, a specialist in connected locks from Austria, has announced the arrival of Matter in its range. First, let’s address the bad news: the current products will not have access to it, as the new home automation standard will be reserved for a new range that should be presented by the end of the year. If you have an older generation lock, it will not receive a software update to activate Matter.

This may be due to the choice to adopt Thread, in addition to Matter, in these new versions. Up until now, Nuki locks communicated either via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi for the Pro 3.0. Thread is a wireless communication protocol designed for home automation, which has the advantage of consuming significantly less power than Wi-Fi, while having a much greater range than Bluetooth. In exchange, a Thread border router will be necessary, but you probably already have one, especially if you own a HomePod or an Apple TV with a recent Ethernet port.

Thread takes care of the hardware part, Matter handles the software. The two should not be confused, although they are often used together, as Nuki demonstrates once again with its new locks.

The manufacturer also states that a Matter update will be necessary to operate its connected locks. SwitchBot has already activated Matter for its own connected lock for a few weeks now, but Nuki’s products are capable of managing openings that unlock with a latch that keeps the door closed even after unlocking the lock. This subtlety was not handled in the Matter protocol, and Nuki worked with the CSA, who is in charge of it, to add it.

This Matter update is expected in the fall, and the new Nuki locks will likely be released shortly after. The prices for this Thread and Matter generation have not yet been announced. It is also unknown whether these locks will be exclusively Matter or remain natively compatible with HomeKit, but the first hypothesis is the most credible, as it will not change anything to benefit from the lock in the Home app and via Siri.
