Luciano Spalletti, who was crowned champion of Italy last season with Naples, has been appointed as the new coach of the Nazionale, announced the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) on Friday.
At the age of 64, and without a position since his decision to leave Naples shortly after the championship, he succeeds Roberto Mancini, who led Italy to the European title in 2021 but failed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
Mancini, in office since May 2018, resigned unexpectedly last Sunday, citing ‘a personal decision’. His name has since been mentioned for the position of coach of Saudi Arabia.
Spalletti will take up his duties on September 1st, before the upcoming national team matches against North Macedonia and Ukraine in the qualifying rounds for Euro 2024 in Germany, confirmed the Italian Federation in a statement.
The new ‘technical commissioner’ of the team is under pressure, having lost against England in their first Euro 2024 qualifier and currently occupying only third place in Group C after two matches.
‘His enthusiasm and expertise will be crucial for the challenges that Italy will face in the coming months,’ emphasized the president of the FIGC, Gabriele Gravina.
‘The national team needed a great coach and I am very happy that he has accepted the technical direction of the Azzurri,’ he also mentioned.
