A pair of Hamilton pizzaiolos kneaded their way to success at the Restaurants Canada show in Toronto this week.

On Tuesday, the industry show hosted its pizza competition, which offers up-and-coming culinary talent the chance to showcase their skills to a panel of judges, including Massimo Capra, who has appeared on several Food Network shows.

The competition took place at the Faema Canada booth inside the Enercare Centre in Toronto.

And after hours of watching dozens of pizza makers from across Canada stretch their dough, pick their toppings and bake their pies to perfection, the winners were announced on social media by Faema Canada.

Salar Madadi, owner of MaiPai, took home first place in the competition, which included $5,000, guaranteed entrance for the International Pizza Challenge at the Pizza Expo in Las Vegas next year, as well as a countertop dough mixer.

This isn’t Madadi’s first time being recognized for his pizza-making skills. His Barton Street East pizzeria was recognized at the 2021 Canadian Pizza Summit when Madadi won best pizza recipe for his Mala Honey Pie.

Raman Chalal, representing Cowabunga Pizzeria, placed second in the competition, taking home $3,000.

Cowabunga Pizzeria recently opened a second location, Cowabunga Plus, on Vine Street. The new location offers an expanded menu and dine-in service.

Both restaurants also competed at the International Pizza Expo and Conference back in March 2022.
