Police arrested and charged four men on May 8 – Sulamain Sarwari, Adian Sarwari, Mohammad Ahmadzai and Azan Syed – alleging they shared and received images and videos of previous terrorist attacks and other IS propaganda.
A fifth man, a 25-year-old from Meadow Heights, was arrested on his return to Melbourne from Malaysia on May 16 and was also charged with possession of violent extremist material.
In May, an AFP spokesman said police were first alerted to the men’s alleged activity in November 2024, when a teenager from Roxburgh Park returned to Melbourne from Turkey and had his luggage searched during a routine examination by the Australian Border Force at Melbourne Airport. This examination uncovered suspicious content on the teen’s phone, the spokesman said. The same thing happened when another teen from Roxburgh Park returned from Turkey on June 1 last year.
As part of the ongoing investigation, ABF officers intercepted a second man from Roxburgh Park, now aged 21, at Melbourne International Airport on 1 June 2025. They performed a routine check of his luggage before his departure for Turkey. During a review of the man’s mobile phone, suspicious content was discovered. Forensic analysis of the devices revealed that the men had sent, shared, and received suspected violent extremist materials (VEM), which included images and videos of previous terrorist attacks and other ISIS propaganda.
Further investigation by the AFP’s National Security Investigations (NSI) team in Victoria resulted in the execution of four search warrants on 7 May 2026 at residential properties in the Melbourne suburbs of Roxburgh Park, Clyde South, and Meadow Heights resulting in the seizure of electronic devices and mobile phones, which will be subject to forensic examination. Two men from Roxburgh Park and two men from Clyde North, aged 19 and 29, were apprehended on suspicion of being in possession of materials that could be considered violent extremist in nature. The suspects appeared at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court, while a fifth man, aged 21, was arrested at the Meadow Heights property and released on bail as investigations continue. The investigation is ongoing, with the assistance of the Victoria Joint Counter Terrorism Team (JCTT).
