The winner of the “creation” category of the 2023 Sony World Photography Awards, Boris Eldagsen, has revealed that the photograph he submitted was created with artificial intelligence (AI) and refused the prize. The image, titled “Pseudomnesia: The Electrician,” depicts two women of different generations in black and white, with lifelike details that made it appear as if it were taken with an analog camera in the 1950s. However, a closer inspection reveals a disproportionate pinkie finger on the left side of the photo. Eldagsen’s objective was to spark a discussion about the role of AI in photography and whether AI-generated images should be allowed to compete in such competitions. Eldagsen’s image was later pulled from the Sony World Photography Awards website. This controversy is not the first time an AI-generated image has won an art prize, and raises questions about the definition of photography and the role of AI in art.
