Un chercheur de renom obtient le prestigieux prix international J. Allyn Taylor en médecine.

Nabil G. Seidah, professor at the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Montreal and researcher at the Montreal Clinical Research Institute (IRCM), receives the prestigious J. Allyn Taylor International Prize in Medicine.

Dr. Seidah is known worldwide as the scientist responsible for the discovery and cloning of seven of the nine known secretory serine proteases belonging to proprotein convertases. Proprotein convertases are essential for regulating neural and endocrine systems and for the proper functioning of several peripheral organs such as the liver, pancreas, pituitary gland, heart, as well as the cardiometabolic and immune systems. Proprotein convertases have been identified as therapeutic targets for viral infections, inflammation, hypercholesterolemia, and cancer. Dr. Seidah’s work, which has already led to revolutionary cholesterol drugs, holds infinite possibilities for the development of future innovative therapies.

At the award ceremony, the jury highlighted that the researcher’s work is an “excellent example of the ability of science at the highest level to have an impact on the scientific community and on people’s health and well-being.”

“The value of Dr. Seidah’s work and its impact on collective health has remained undeniable over the decades, and this new recognition by his peers is a just reward that makes us very proud,” said Dr. Jean-François Côté, president and scientific director of the IRCM.

With over 820 peer-reviewed manuscripts, Dr. Seidah is the most recognized protease expert in Canada and the sixth in the world. As genetics and biopharmaceutics continue to develop as fields of research, Dr. Seidah’s discoveries will result in improved therapies and personalized preventive treatments for age-related diseases.

Over the course of a nearly 50-year career, Dr. Seidah has received numerous awards and honors. He is, among others, a member of the National Order of Quebec since 1997 and the Order of Canada since 1999, holds a level 1 chair in precursor proteolysis since 2003, and was the recipient of the Grand Prix Lefoulon-Delalande 2018 from the Institute of France, the Akira-Endo 2018 prize for his research and innovations in cardiovascular diseases, as well as the 2021 Kuwait Prize for Applied Medical Sciences.
