Umicore, a specialist in materials technology, announced Thursday the signing of an agreement with Microsoft to enable the use of artificial intelligence to facilitate and accelerate its research on battery material technologies for electric vehicles.
Under this agreement, Umicore will benefit from Microsoft’s services, Azure OpenAI Service, to create a customized artificial intelligence environment based on data from the research and development of battery materials, conducted for several decades by the Belgian group. Historical external data and information on the latest technologies will also be added to this platform.
Lithium discovered for the first time in Belgium: enough to produce 125,000 electric car batteries per year.
“AI and machine learning have, in recent years, added a new dimension and have already enabled Umicore to file the first AI-based patents in the field of battery materials,” the company said in a statement.
These battery material technologies will ultimately be intended for various types of electric vehicles, from entry-level to luxury vehicles, Umicore further clarified.
This agreement “will help us fully exploit all compelling internal and external data, formulate new materials more intelligently, and stay at the forefront of understanding and anticipating customer needs in this rapidly growing market,” commented Umicore CEO Mathias Miedreich.
