The former French striker, Thierry Henry, was appointed on Monday as coach of the Hopes and Olympic team of France, according to a source close to the negotiations.

The main objective of the former Arsenal legend (46 years old), who succeeds Sylvain Ripoll and whose choice was unanimously approved by the Executive Committee of the French Football Federation, according to the same source, will be to make the French shine at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

He could lead Kylian Mbappé since the 2018 World Cup champion has repeatedly expressed his “dream” to participate in the Olympic Games, a wish supported by the FFF. The men’s football tournament at the Olympics is reserved for players aged 23 and under, but each team can include three older players in its squad.

Four candidates

Henry was part of a list of four candidates, also including Jocelyn Gourvennec, Julien Stéphan, and Sabri Lamouchi, who applied to replace Sylvain Ripoll, dismissed after the elimination of the “Bleuets” in the quarterfinals of the 2023 Euro against Ukraine (3-1).

With his track record and aura, Henry, a World Cup (1998) and European champion (2000) with the French national team, will undoubtedly bring great media visibility to the Hopes selection, which, in addition to Paris 2024, will have the task of securing its ticket for the 2025 Euro. The first qualifying match is scheduled for September 11 in Slovenia, following a friendly match on September 7 against Denmark in Nancy.

Everything to prove

But while the former striker (51 goals in 123 appearances for the national team) had an immense playing career, his transition to head coach has been much less successful so far. His first experience at Monaco lasted only three and a half months, from October 2018 to January 2019. He was then appointed head coach of the Montreal Impact in MLS in November 2019, but eventually resigned in February 2021 without achieving significant results.

He has also been an assistant coach for the Belgian national team on two occasions (2016-2018, 2021-2022), reaching the semi-finals of the World Cup in 2018.

Henry has also been very present in television over the past two years as a consultant (Amazon Prime Video in France, CBS Sports in the United Kingdom).
