Stan Wawrinka s’incline en huitièmes de finale du Swiss Open de Gstaad face à Jaume Munar

Stan Wawrinka (ATP 74) missed out on a perhaps unique opportunity to win a 17th title on the circuit. He was eliminated in the round of 16 of the Swiss Open in Gstaad. The unfortunate finalist in 2005 in Saanenland, the 38-year-old from Vaud was defeated by the Spaniard Jaume Munar (110) 7-6 (7/3) 6-1 in the second round.

The Vaud player, who has only reached the semi-finals once since his return from injury in the spring of 2022 (in Metz last autumn), could have become the first Swiss to reach the quarter-finals in Gstaad since his last visit to the Bernese Oberland in 2013. He had been forced to retire against Feliciano Lopez at the time.

Ten years later, the opportunity was there for the former world No. 3, whose last title on the ATP Tour dates back to the spring of 2017 in Geneva. He would have faced the modest Argentine Pedro Cachin (90) for the first time, who eliminated the top seed of the draw Roberto Bautista Agut (25).

A lack of precision

But for that, he would have needed to be more consistent. The 38-year-old right-hander didn’t start off well in this match, immediately losing his serve. But at 2-0 for Munar, Wawrinka bounced back by winning five games in a row. However, while he had a break point opportunity, the three-time Grand Slam winner missed his chance and ended up seeing his opponent come back to 5-5. Despite a comeback, he eventually lost the tie-break 7/3.

In the second set, Wawrinka gave up his serve and quickly found himself trailing 3-0. Unable to find the right length, Stan The Man made countless unforced errors. On the other hand, Munar understood that his consistency in the game was his ticket to the quarter-finals. The Spaniard closed out the match on his second match point, with his opponent hitting a forehand that was much too long.
