After beating Zurich in all four matches in the last playoff semi-final, HC Bienne lost all four duels of the regular season against the Lions. Like last September 19th, the people of Biel lost 4-1 this Friday at the Swiss Life Arena. However, they came in better form than their opponent of the evening, who lost five of their last seven outings. But after three consecutive victories, Bienne rediscovered defeat.

We had to wait until the 6th minute of play to witness the first spark of the game. It came from the stick of Jesper Frödén. The Swede, who wore the top-scored shirt of Zurich due to the absence of Denis Malgin, who injured his foot, took advantage of a good pass from Yannick Zehnder to take the puck and beat Harri Säteri with a classy backhand.

A little more enterprising, Bienne came closer to Simon Hrubec’s goal without really putting the Czech goalkeeper in danger. It was even Frödén who could have given the “Z” a two-goal lead just before the first siren.

Balcers’ double punishment

The people of Seeland then let themselves be somewhat lulled by the leader of the National League. And taking advantage of a penalty earned by Gaëtan Haas (the only one of the game), Zurich doubled its lead with rather disconcerting ease. Left alone at the second post, Denis Hollenstein calmly scored the 2-0 after a quick entry into the zone by the locals (25th).

Suffocated and lacking success in their counter-attacks, Petri Matikainen’s men still managed to reduce the score by exploiting a puck loss by the Zurich players in the neutral zone. It was Fabio Hofer, perfectly set up by Yakovenko, who found the gap between Hrubec’s legs (37th).

But the people of Biel did not materialize their good start to the third period and were surprised twice more, due to an opportunistic Rudolf Balcers in his two goals (50th and 53rd).

The HCB will try to get back on track on Sunday when they host Langnau at the Tissot Arena (8 pm). A vital match if Bienne intends to stay in the top 6 and qualify directly for the playoffs.
