Like in Paris on Wednesday, a mosquito control operation was organized in the middle of the night from Thursday to Friday in the streets of downtown Nice, at the initiative of the Regional Health Agency (ARS). A preventive operation following the detection of a case of dengue fever in the area around Masséna high school.

From 3:30 in the morning and for about two hours, an ARS truck sprayed a product based on pyrethroids into the air, harmless to humans and easily available in pharmacies and stores. However, since it is an insecticide, the ARS recommends rinsing with clear water any object that may have been exposed to the product, especially laundry. Private growers are also advised not to consume their fruits and vegetables for three days if they have been exposed.

This mosquito control action is complemented by a door-to-door survey by the ARS in the affected neighborhood to identify people who may have had symptoms, provide information on what to do, and spread prevention messages. Hospitals, private doctors, and medical analysis laboratories in the affected areas are also mobilized to take care of and test people who may have dengue fever symptoms and report them to the ARS.

Mosquito traps being studied

Nine cases of dengue fever were detected during the summer in the Alpes-Maritimes, as well as one case of the West Nile virus. This is a decrease compared to last year, where 45 cases were recorded. “This still remains an additional warning sign regarding climate change. The rise in temperatures contributes to the proliferation of these mosquitoes that thrive in wet areas,” says Richard Chemla, Deputy Mayor of Nice in charge of Health.

Aware of the health risk that an epidemic of dengue fever could pose, the city of Nice is reportedly in contact with a company specialized in installing mosquito traps. Feasibility studies are already underway. “For Christian Estrosi, the health of fellow citizens is a priority. But it must not compromise biodiversity. Also, it should be noted that these traps will not be chemical,” states the elected official.

In humans, dengue fever generally manifests as flu-like symptoms within two weeks after a mosquito bite. High fever, chills, headaches, and even vomiting and joint pain are symptoms that should alert you. However, in most cases, the disease remains asymptomatic. As a preventive measure and to prevent the proliferation of mosquitoes, the ARS advises storing anything that can hold water, regularly emptying plant saucers and anything that retains small amounts of water, ensuring proper gutter drainage, covering whatever can be covered, and collecting green waste that can become resting places for adult mosquitoes.
