Obsidian révèle de nouvelles informations sur Avowed : fini la coopération et retour à la vision de base

Obsidian is definitely one of the most prolific Xbox studios that Microsoft can rely on. After Pentiment last year and in addition to The Outer Worlds 2, Obsidian still plans to release Avowed next year and has just revealed new information about it.

A pivot for Avowed, goodbye to cooperation

It was in a documentary video celebrating Obsidian’s 20th anniversary that several executives sat down to share behind-the-scenes anecdotes about game development. It is in this context that new information about Avowed was revealed.

We learn that Avowed was initially intended to be a multiplayer game. Obsidian explains that at the time when the studio was still independent and looking for a partner to finance Avowed, they needed to have something marketable.

This was a game that was more interesting to publishers. And when you ask for something like 50, 60, 70, or 80 million dollars, you need to have something interesting to talk about. And multiplayer made the game interesting.

But it turned out to be a bad idea. The developers explain that they were too focused on cooperation and how everything fit together, including how to write conversations and implement quests in the game. As things progressed, Obsidian realized that the effort was not being placed in the right direction.

Obsidian therefore made what is called in the industry a “pivot,” which is a fairly radical change in a project to redefine its added value. In the end, Avowed will be a game closer to what Obsidian does best, and that’s a good thing.

“Avowed is our vision of what a first-person fantasy game is,” says Justin Britch, development manager at Obsidian. The developers are thus focusing on unique tailored content, in-depth systems, and incredible narrative focused on characters, societies, and factions.

Avowed will be available in 2024 exclusively on Xbox Series X|S and PC. It will be integrated into the Xbox Game Pass and PC Game Pass from its launch.
