Barcelona Mayor Defends Unexpected Alliance for City’s Benefit
Barcelona, Spain – Barcelona’s Mayor Jaume Collboni has defended a surprising political alignment, stating that despite ideological differences, the collaboration represents the best course of action for the city. Collboni, who assumed office in June 2023, made the comments regarding a recent, unspecified agreement.
The mayor, a member of the Partit dels Socialistes de Catalunya since 1991, acknowledged the partnership wasn’t a natural fit, but emphasized prioritizing the needs of Barcelona, the fourth-largest city in Catalonia.
“Ideologically, it doesn’t align with our line, but it’s the best measure for the city,” Collboni reportedly said, according to El Mundo.
Collboni was chosen as mayor following a full council session on June 17, 2023. His political career began during his university years at the University of Barcelona, and he previously served as a deputy in the Parliament of Catalonia starting in 2010.
The move comes as Barcelona navigates a complex political landscape and faces ongoing challenges related to urban development and public services. While details of the agreement remain limited, Collboni’s statement suggests a pragmatic approach to governance, prioritizing practical solutions over strict adherence to ideological principles.
