Le taux de mortalité du cancer du col de l’utérus en Côte d’Ivoire atteindra 102,2% d’ici 2040, selon un expert

Abidjan, 1er juillet 2023 (AIP) – Le docteur Simon Pierre Boni, from the partnership and multisectorality department of the National Program for the Fight Against Cancer (PNLCa), announced that the mortality rate for cervical cancer in Côte d’Ivoire will reach 102.2% by 2040.

“By 2040, if no significant program is implemented in Côte d’Ivoire, we will observe a 188% increase in cancer-related deaths, including 102.5% of deaths due to cervical cancer,” said Dr Boni during a meeting for exchange and proposals on the elimination of cervical cancer in Côte d’Ivoire with women from the media, which took place on Friday, June 30, 2023, in Abidjan.

Speaking on the theme “Cervical Cancer and its Prevention Methods,” Dr Boni highlighted that according to the World Health Organization (WHO), Côte d’Ivoire records 2067 newly diagnosed cases each year, as well as 1417 deaths, with a late diagnosis rate of 75%.

The doctor explained that cervical cancer is caused by persistent infection with oncogenic human papillomavirus (HPV), with types 16 and 18 responsible for nearly 70% of cases.

He also stated that risk factors for women include early sexual intercourse (before 18 years old) or having multiple sexual partners. HIV infection is also a six times higher risk factor for cervical cancer.

In order to prevent and eliminate this disease, Dr Boni mentioned the global initiative to eliminate cervical cancer by 2030, which advocates for 90% of girls to be fully vaccinated against HPV before the age of 15, 70% of women to undergo screening before the age of 35, and 90% of women identified with cervical disease to receive treatment.

This exchange meeting was initiated by the coalition of cancer-fighting organizations (COLCC) in collaboration with the National Program for the Fight Against Cancer (PNLCa), the Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI), and the network of women journalists and communication professionals (REFJPCI). Its aim is to raise awareness among women in the media about cervical cancer and to promote the dissemination of preventive measures for this disease through vaccination.
