Space Forge, a Cardiff-based innovative company from the United Kingdom, plans to test its revolutionary thermal shield, Pridwen, this year. The shield, which folds and unfolds like origami, is intended to be launched into space for an atmospheric re-entry test. According to a recent update from the European Space Agency (ESA), the Pridwen shield will be launched on board a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket during the ForgeStar-1A mission. Once its payload is released, the shield will deploy for atmospheric re-entry and will then be recovered with Star Forge’s unmanned “hover net” recovery device.
Unlike traditional, rigid, and ablation thermal shields, Pridwen is designed with a high-temperature-resistant alloy fabric and uses origami-inspired folding techniques to optimize space. (Learn more)
