Raif Badawi, a Saudi blogger, has lost hope of reuniting with his family in Quebec since his release from prison in March 2022, according to his wife. Badawi was imprisoned in 2012 and sentenced to 1,000 lashes for insulting Islam on his website, Free Saudi Liberals. His family left the country and obtained political asylum in Canada in 2013. Badawi’s wife, Ensaf Haidar, has been fighting for his freedom and the possibility of one day reuniting with him. Haidar said that her husband has lost all hope and is just living day by day. He is not allowed to leave the country until 2032, and Haidar believes that his mental and physical health has been damaged by his time in prison. He is unable to work and is recognised by people who know his name and point him out as the person who spoke out against the regime. Haidar has not lost hope completely, but she would like to see real change in Saudi Arabia, rather than the superficial changes that have taken place so far.
