Italian Inspectors to Review ‘Forest Family’ Case Amidst Political Pressure

L’Aquila, Italy – The Italian Ministry of Justice will send inspectors to the Juvenile Court of L’Aquila to review the case of an Anglo-Australian family who lived in isolation in a forest in the Chieti province, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced Monday. The move comes after a court decision to remove the three children from the care of their mother, Catherine Trevallion, and place them in a protective structure, a decision that has sparked public debate and political intervention.

The inspectors, dispatched at the request of Justice Minister Carlo Nordio, will aim to “reach a definitive conclusion” on the matter, according to Nordio. The Juvenile Court of L’Aquila responded to the announcement with a statement condemning “aggressive and inappropriate tones” used by some political figures in discussing the case, and defending its work as solely focused on protecting the well-being of the children.

The case centers on the family’s unconventional lifestyle and the court’s determination that the children’s needs were not being adequately met. Last Friday, the court ordered the children’s removal from the family home and the separation of the mother from her children. That transfer, however, appears to be on hold, thanks in part to the intervention of Alessandra De Febis, the regional guarantor for childhood, who is working to prevent further trauma to the children, who have been in a care facility for approximately four months.

The situation has drawn attention from other political leaders as well. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport Matteo Salvini announced he plans to visit the father in Abruzzo this week, stating, “I will go to see dad.”

The Ministry of Justice’s inspection, which began in late November after the suspension of parental responsibility, will culminate in a report presented to the Minister. He will then have the option to close the case or initiate disciplinary action against the judges involved, a decision that could ultimately be appealed to the Supreme Court.

Despite the ongoing review, the legal proceedings will continue. The family’s lawyers have appealed the court’s decision, requesting a suspension of the order. Cecilia Angrisano, the president of the Juvenile Court of L’Aquila, who has been the target of online abuse, emphasized that all judicial decisions are made with the best interests of the children in mind and are subject to review by higher courts.

The mother remains in the family’s woodland dwelling, and arrangements for her visits with the children in the care facility are still being finalized. De Febis has dismissed concerns raised by a court-appointed expert about the possibility of the children being put up for adoption or separated, stating she will take all necessary measures to protect their rights.

The family continues to hope for reunification. The father was visited Monday by the children’s aunt and grandmother, while the mother remains in the forest home.
