The Foo Fighters frontman joined Krist Novoselic and producer Steve Albini on the podcast Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend on Monday to discuss the success of the grunge band. Talking about the creation of Nirvana, the performer of Learn to Fly revealed that he lived with the late Kurt Cobain.

“Before we made No Big Deal, we were living in poverty,” he explained. “I was living with Kurt in this tiny apartment and there were sausage stick wrappers and cigarettes everywhere. It was fucking gross. I would have done anything to have my own apartment, and to do it while making music.”

While the 54-year-old star claims that Nirvana went from “three kids touring in a van to a big band,” he added that they didn’t experience overnight success. “We didn’t wake up with a million dollars in our mailbox the next day. The per diem went up to $15 a day. We were staying in motels. And then, from September to December 1991, everything exploded,” the rocker explained.

Dave Grohl also added that the band’s third album, In Utero, became “the uncomfortable soundtrack to that transition.” “In 1992 or 1993, we were living in a world different from barely 16 months before,” he added.

Nirvana released a 30th anniversary edition of In Utero this month. This album represents the band’s final release of original music before Kurt Cobain’s suicide at the age of 27 in April 1994, following a battle with addiction and depression.
