Ohio Man Pleads Not Guilty in Wife’s Shooting Death, Claims False Burglary Report

TIPP CITY, Ohio (AP) — Caleb Flynn, 39, entered a plea of not guilty Friday to charges of murder and felonious assault in connection with the death of his wife, Ashley Flynn, 37, earlier this week. The case, unfolding in the small southwestern Ohio community of Tipp City, has drawn attention due to Flynn’s past as a contestant on the television show “American Idol” and the initial report of a home invasion.

Ashley Flynn was found dead from gunshot wounds at the couple’s residence around 2:30 a.m. EST Monday. Police responded to a 911 call made by Caleb Flynn, who reported a burglary in progress and claimed his wife had been shot by an intruder. During the eight-minute call, he can be heard expressing distress, repeatedly calling out his wife’s name and describing the scene as “blood everywhere,” according to reports from People magazine.

However, Tipp City Police Chief Greg Adkins stated Thursday that the investigation revealed probable cause to charge Caleb Flynn with his wife’s murder. While acknowledging evidence of forced entry, Adkins declined to release specific details, citing the ongoing nature of the investigation. “The family and community deserve a thorough, professional and compassionate investigation into this very sensitive matter,” Adkins said in a statement.

Flynn is also facing two counts of felonious assault and two counts of tampering with evidence. During a video arraignment hearing Friday, he addressed the court, stating, “I just want to take care of my daughters. I’m not a risk,” as reported by the Dayton Daily News. Judge Samuel Huffman set bail at $2 million and scheduled a preliminary hearing for next Thursday.

The couple have two daughters. Ashley Flynn was a volleyball coach, substitute teacher, and described by her family as a source of “endless light” in their lives. A statement released by the family through People expressed their grief and struggle to cope with the loss.

Caleb Flynn competed on season 13 of “American Idol” in 2013, reaching the Top 40. He served as a “music pastor” at a local church. His attorney, L. Patrick Mulligan, has asserted Flynn’s innocence and vowed to prove it.

Domestic violence remains a significant public health issue in the United States. According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, nearly 1 in 4 women and 1 in 9 men experience severe intimate partner physical violence in their lifetime. Ohio, like many states, has seen a concerning rise in domestic violence incidents in recent years, exacerbated by factors such as economic stress and the COVID-19 pandemic. The case highlights the often hidden dangers within seemingly ordinary communities and underscores the importance of comprehensive support systems for victims and families affected by domestic violence.
