Bolsonaro Out of Intensive Care, Remains Hospitalized Amidst Coup Attempt Sentence

BRASILIA, Brazil (AP) — Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has been moved from intensive care to a semi-intensive care unit as his condition improves, his wife Michelle Bolsonaro announced Monday via an Instagram post. The 70-year-old right-wing politician was admitted to a hospital in Brasilia on Friday due to pneumonia.

According to Michelle Bolsonaro, recent tests indicate reduced inflammation. “We remain confident he will overcome this moment too,” she wrote. Hospital DF Star had previously stated Sunday that Bolsonaro’s kidney function had improved, but did not mention the transfer to semi-intensive care.

Bolsonaro is currently serving a 27-year prison sentence after being convicted of leading a coup attempt in 2023. He also faces charges including leading an armed criminal organization and attempting to dismantle Brazil’s democratic institutions, allegations he denies. He was transferred to a larger cell in January from federal police headquarters.

The former president was hospitalized from the prison where he is serving his sentence. Bolsonaro has a history of hospitalizations, including treatment following a stabbing during a 2018 campaign event.

His family and supporters have repeatedly appealed to Brazil’s Supreme Court for house arrest, but those requests have been denied.

Bolsonaro served as president from 2019 to 2022. His son, Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, is expected to contend for the presidency against Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva later this year.
