In the politics of Lisieux (Calvados) calls for the greatest vigilance. In early December 2023, at least three elderly people were victims of a “fake courier” scam in the town.
A fake bank advisor calls
The technique was the same each time. The perpetrators contacted the residents pretending to be their bank advisor, report our colleagues from Ouest France . They asked for the four digits of their secret code in order to renew their card.
Then a fake courier went to the victims’ homes to collect their bank card, and give them a new, fake one.
Once the cards were in hand, the perpetrator (s) used them to withdraw cash from the ATM or make purchases in stores. The damage is estimated at nearly € 8,000 .
“Everywhere in France”
This scam is currently booming . “It’s a process that has been used all over France,” explains Cyril Vallet the commander of the Lisieux police station.
“You shouldn’t give your card to a courier, banks don’t do it. And a bank advisor will never ask for the card’s secret code. ”
The Lisieux police invite any other victims of this scam to come forward.
