Von Humboldt : pionnier de l’étude de la nature et de la compréhension du climat

Von Humboldt writes 23 volumes of observations, accompanied by engravings, paintings, and drawings. Before anyone else, the scientist formulates the hypothesis that climate change can be caused by human activity and denounces colonization and slavery that he witnesses in South America.

Upon his return in 1807, he publishes an Essay on the Geography of Plants (1807)where his physical depiction of life appears, still used today to study the evolution of plant families in relation to climate change. One year later, in 1808, he writes Tableaux de la nature, a succession of scientific observations combining travel narrative, poetry, and scientific analysis.

Finally, it takes him 20 years to write Cosmos, an essay in 5 volumes in which he describes the interconnection of all natural phenomena within the Universe.
