Somater s’associe à Éranova pour une gamme d’emballages bio-sourcés 100% Made in France

Somater has partnered with the French start-up Éranova to create a range of 100% bio-sourced packaging solutions Made in France. The goal of this partnership is to offer a sustainable alternative to fossil-based polymers.

Upcycled Green Algae

Somater’s new range of bio-sourced solutions relies on the ALGX material developed by Éranova using green algae collected on the shores of the Berre pond in Bouches-du-Rhône. The algae are then enriched with starch in large basins where they continue to absorb CO2 from the atmosphere. The starch is then extracted and transformed into a processable bio-sourced resin.

This technology has the advantage of using a natural resource that is invasive and non-competitive with agricultural crops. Green algae is also capable of absorbing up to 10 times more CO2 per hectare than forests: ensuring an exceptional ecological balance!

Recyclable Composite Resin

To create its primary packaging, Somater uses an innovative combination of the bio-sourced ALGX material with PP/PE to achieve a recyclable solution.

“100% bio-sourced or PCR (Post-Consumer Recycled) combinations are also offered. These formulations give brands a wide range of possibilities with a positive environmental impact that is well-documented through standardized Life Cycle Assessments,” explains Somater in a statement.

The resin can be used in various manufacturing processes, including injection molding, blow molding, extrusion blow molding, and thermoforming.

Aesthetic Qualities

According to Somater, the use of ALGX material gives the product a velvety and silky texture offering a high-end tactile experience. The composite resin has a “caramel” natural hue and can be customized in a palette ranging from white to black, as well as pastel colors.

Decor options in silk screening and hot stamping can add an additional aesthetic touch.

Various pack formats were presented during the January 2024 Paris Packaging Week, including jars, bottles, caps, lids, and cups.
