“L’essentiel”: Did MSC Cruises stay afloat during the pandemic?

Frank Van den Steen, General Manager Benelux at MSC Cruises: We benefited from freight, which represents a large part of MSC’s activities and was in high demand during the pandemic, to maintain a solid financial base and invest in new cruise ships.

Has the market recovered?

Yes, demand for cruises has never been stronger than it is today. In Belux, we have weeks of sales to 2,000 clients. This is unprecedented. I think inflation has made holidaymakers more sensitive to prices. If we compare a cruise to other vacation options, it offers a good value for money.

Who are your clients?

With 22 ships, six ranges, and destinations as diverse as the Greek islands, Norwegian fjords, and Dubai, the profile of clients is much more varied than before. Our latest purchases, large ships with many facilities for children and teenagers, are very popular with families.

What is the future for cruises in the face of the climate crisis?

Our new ships are powered by liquefied natural gas, which allows for a 25% reduction in CO2 emissions. But we also reduce our impact through other means. Our pools are filled with desalinated sea water, the air conditioning water is used to clean the decks, and over 60% of our waste is recycled on board…

Are we still in a race for gigantism or are we reversing course?

At 333 m long for our largest ships, we are at our maximum, as we must be able to turn in ports. We will launch the luxury product Explora Journeys, which will be six boats with less than 1,000 passengers. And also the World Class, world tours of 120 days aboard for experienced passengers.
