Model Empire, Wisconsin Hobby Shop, Closes After 56 Years

WEST ALLIS, Wisconsin – After more than five decades serving generations of hobbyists, Model Empire, a family-owned and operated shop in West Allis, Wisconsin, is closing its doors. Owners Alex and Roberta Geiger announced the decision, marking the end of an era for the beloved local business.

The shop, which first opened in 1970, became a destination for enthusiasts of model trains, planes, and automobiles. Alex Geiger took over the business from his mother in 1983, continuing a legacy of providing specialized products and a welcoming community space.

“This is what we’ve done all these years, so it’s going to be a major change,” said Geiger, reflecting on the personal impact of the closure. The shop has been more than just a business for the Geigers; it’s been a central part of their lives and a gathering place for loyal customers.

Despite the closure of the physical storefront, the decision isn’t driven by financial hardship. In fact, the store experienced a surge in sales during the COVID-19 pandemic. Instead, the Geigers expressed a desire to slow down, spend more time with family and grandchildren, and enjoy a new chapter in their lives.

“Our success as a business wouldn’t have been possible without all our customers,” the couple stated on Facebook. “The time has come when we would like to take a step back and enjoy a bit more time with our family and grandkids as we semi-retire. The hobby industry has changed a lot over the last decade or so and we believe that this is the best decision for us.”

Model Empire will be holding liquidation sales to clear out its extensive inventory, which includes items stored in multiple warehouses. Following the sales, the business will transition to online sales and appearances at hobby shows, allowing the Geigers to remain involved in the community they’ve served for so long.

Customers have been expressing their sadness and sharing memories online. One long-time customer recalled starting to shop at Model Empire in 1986, and continuing to visit even after moving away. Another fondly remembered receiving the store’s catalogue in the mail.

The shop will remain open for one final month, giving hobbyists a last chance to browse the aisles of kits, collectibles, and model cars that have defined the West Allis community for decades.

According to reporting from TMJ4 News and CBS 58, Model Empire’s closure represents a loss for the local hobby community, but also a well-deserved retirement for the Geiger family after 56 years of dedication.
