Lisa Fauconnier, étudiante à Supaéro, va vivre un mois dans le désert de l’Utah pour reproduire les conditions de vie sur Mars.

Lisa Fauconnier, a student at the Institut supérieur de l’aéronautique de l’espace Supaéro, will spend a month in the Utah desert. The goal: to replicate the living conditions on Mars.

In a little less than three months, Lisa Fauconnier will take the big leap and fly to Mars, or almost. From February 18 to March 16, the young woman from Manche, a student at the Institut supérieur de l’aéronautique de l’espace Supaéro in Toulouse, will join a delegation in the Utah desert (United States) in order to experience life conditions similar to those on the orange planet.

“We will live for a month in the station and do everything as if we were on that planet. This includes the food we eat and the outings,” she said on BFM Normandie radio.

Lisa will be in charge of the physical and moral well-being of the crew. She will organize daily sports sessions and team-building activities during the expedition.

“The goal is to ensure that everyone is in good health to accomplish the mission,” she summarized.

The station is divided into several parts: a main building that will serve as a living space, an outdoor greenhouse connected by tunnels, a “science dome” (an infrastructure for interactive scientific exploration, editor’s note), and an observatory.

“Our goal is twofold. First, there is the simulation aspect, ensuring that we respect the constraints imposed on astronauts who would really go to Mars,” she said. “The other goal is scientific. There will be equipment tests, experiments testing our ability to respond to stress, fatigue, etc.”

To adhere as closely as possible to reality, the crew will operate in conditions where oxygen is scarce. The only constraint that is impossible to replicate is the microgravity present on Mars.

Participants will be cut off from the world for most of the day, except for one hour per day. During this time, they will have the opportunity to send emails to their families or friends.

Due to the high cost of the trip, an online fundraiser has been launched to financially support the crew.
