Adley Rutschman and Austin Hays both hit solo home runs, Tyler Wells pitched effectively through the seventh inning, and the Baltimore Orioles beat the Toronto Blue Jays 4-2 on Thursday.

The Orioles won two out of three games in the series against the Blue Jays, who have a 7-17 record against other teams in the AL East division. The Orioles now have the second-best record in Major League Baseball (43-25) behind the Tampa Bay Rays (50-22).

Rutschman tied the game 2-2 with his ninth home run of the season in the fifth inning, and Hays added an insurance run with his eighth home run in the eighth inning. Rutschman finished the game with three hits and Hays scored two runs.

Gunner Henderson opened the scoring in the first inning by driving Anthony Santander home with a single. Santander then broke the 2-2 tie in the sixth with a single that allowed Hayes to cross the plate.

Jorge Mateo stole two bases, bringing his season total to 20, which ranks fifth in Major League Baseball.

Wells (6-2) allowed two runs on five hits and recorded eight strikeouts in six and two-thirds innings.

“He was really excellent,” Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said. “That’s often how it goes for him: he throws a lot of strikes, he gets ahead in the count, he’s accurate.”

Yennier Cano got three outs, and then Felix Bautista struck out Matt Chapman in the eighth inning with two outs and two runners on base. Bautista stayed in the game in the ninth, earning his 18th save.

Danny Jansen drove in the Blue Jays’ two runs with two home runs in the loss. He had a total of three hits.

Toronto went 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position.

“The guys are getting on base, but we’re not getting the big hit often enough,” Blue Jays manager John Schneider said. “We need to fix that.”
