Le miraculeux rétablissement de Steven Spinale : un combat contre la septicémie

Steven Spinale, a 36-year-old father, went through a terrible ordeal at the end of 2022, as reported by The Sun. According to his sister Michelle, he was sick for a month before being hospitalized. He went to the hospital several times, but was sent home, with doctors thinking he was exaggerating. However, his condition deteriorated rapidly. He started vomiting blood and had difficulty breathing. Eventually, it was his sister who had to call emergency services.

At the hospital, doctors were puzzled by his symptoms. They couldn’t identify the cause. “All they could determine was that he was bleeding internally somewhere,” his sister wrote on a fundraising platform.

A terrifying diagnosis emerges

a rare bacteria in his bloodthat shut down all his organs,” according to Michelle. He developed sepsis, an excessive immune system response to an infection, which can lead to septic shock and multiple organ failure. This infection was caused after Steven tried to remove an ingrown hair he had in his groin.

Steven’s condition rapidly deteriorated. He contracted the flu, bilateral pneumonia, and developed acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) rendering his lungs unable to function properly. Furthermore, the infection reached his heart and “destroyed” it, his sister reported. Due to his critical condition, he could not undergo immediate surgery.

A long and difficult road to recovery

Placed in an artificial coma and on intubation, Steven had only 4% chance of survival according to doctors. His family, never leaving his side, continued to hope. To treat ARDS, he was placed on a special bed that rotated him regularly for two weeks, “like a rotisserie chicken,” in Michelle’s words. He also underwent open heart surgery to repair the damage caused by sepsis.

After a month of coma and multiple treatments, Steven finally woke up without any neurological sequelae. “Steven has a long way to go, but he is on the right path,” his sister wrote in November 2022. “He is relearning to sit up on his own, which is amazing.” Released from the hospital in a wheelchair, Steven regained the ability to walk by the end of 2023. “I still think back to the moment when we were told that Steven was brain dead and we needed to pull the plug,” Michelle shared. “What a journey.
