La magie des comédies romantiques de Noël : un phénomène tenace

It’s the season. Skiing, mulled wine… and good feelings. Love in particular, spilling over from our screens. Just try it: turning on your TV these days means being bombarded with an avalanche of romantic comedies in red and white (Christmas at the Ranch, With You for Christmas), all telling the same story in the end: the meeting of two destined souls, who, after 1h25, will end up in each other’s arms under artificial snowflakes. In December, romantic comedies are snow (ing) down.

But make no mistake, the phenomenon is far from temporary. Despite its image of a sugary, silly, or even guilty pleasure, the genre is one of the most enduring in the history of cinema. Over the years, it has given rise to as many commercial successes as cult films, the kind that we still watch again and again with friends and family. Notting Hill, Four Weddings and a Funeral or Love Actually, classic British movies with Hugh Grant, Emma Thompson, and Colin Firth as heart convicts, celebrated their 20th anniversary in 2023.
