Iran’s Strait of Hormuz Blockade Poses ‘Catastrophic’ Risk, U.S. Expert Warns

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates – A potential disruption of oil tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, orchestrated by Iran, presents a significant and escalating threat to global energy markets and international security, according to a recently published assessment by retired U.S. Air Force General S. Clinton Hinote.

Hinote, a former chief strategist for the Air Force, has cautioned that even a single successful Iranian blockade could trigger a major international crisis. The assessment, initially reported by Der Spiegel, highlights the difficulty in countering Iran’s capabilities in the strategic waterway.

The Strait of Hormuz, a narrow passage connecting the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea, is a critical chokepoint for global oil supply. Approximately 20% of the world’s oil passes through the strait daily, according to data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration. Iran’s ability to disrupt this flow gives it considerable leverage, particularly as the country faces ongoing economic pressures.

Recent reports indicate Iran has already begun throttling traffic through the strait, a move widely seen as a response to international sanctions and regional tensions. The New York Times reported on March 12, 2026, that Iran’s actions are a demonstration of its power despite being weakened by war.

Hinote’s analysis underscores the complex challenges involved in ensuring the free flow of traffic through the strait. While the U.S. Navy maintains a presence in the region, directly confronting Iran carries its own risks of escalation.

The situation demands careful diplomatic maneuvering and a robust international response to deter further Iranian actions and safeguard global energy security. The potential for a “catastrophe,” as Hinote warns, remains very real.
