“Aya Nakamura et Gazo sacrés artistes de l’année aux Flammes, les trophées du rap et de ses courants”

Aya Nakamura, who had missed out on the Flame for Caribbean or Caribbean-inspired song of the year, has won the Flame for female artist of the year. Gazo was crowned male artist of the year.

Aya Nakamura and Gazo were crowned female and male artists of the year, at the first edition of the Flammes, awards dedicated to rap and its currents, on Thursday night in Paris, at the Théâtre du Châtelet.

This is a great revenge for the Franco-Malian, the French-speaking singer most listened to in the world, who has never been honored with a major award at the Victoires de la musique.

This last ceremony had only awarded her the trophy for the most streamed artist in 2022, a purely statistical award not coming from a jury’s decision.

Gazo, a worthy French representative of drill

This time, the Flammes award resulted from the choice of jurors, music industry professionals in the rap/r’n’b/new pop sphere. In January, the 28-year-old singer released ADN, her fourth album.

Her life changed with the release of Djadja, a song from 2018 with worldwide impact. This hit has accumulated more than 900 million views on YouTube and even made Madonna’s children dance, as seen on social media.

Gazo was named male artist, beating favorites Dinos and Tiakola. KMT, his latest album, released in 2022, ranked 4th in France’s best sales last year.

At 28 years old, he is the worthy French representative of drill, the dark rap trend from Chicago. His first album in 2021 was called Perceuse FR.

Other categories combined jury and public votes. The Flammes aim to be an alternative to the Victoires de la musique, which under-represent rap and its currents in awards.
