Strait of Hormuz Closure Prompts Urgent Talks Between Starmer, Trump

LONDON – British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and U.S. President Donald Trump held discussions Sunday regarding the critical situation in the Middle East, with a focus on the ongoing blockage of the Strait of Hormuz by Iran and its impact on global trade.

Downing Street confirmed the conversation, stating that the leaders underscored the “importance” of reopening the vital waterway to alleviate disruptions to international shipping and curb rising costs worldwide. The closure is impacting economies globally, adding pressure to supply chains already strained by recent geopolitical events.

The Strait of Hormuz, a narrow passage connecting the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea, is a crucial chokepoint for global oil supplies. Approximately 20% of the world’s oil passes through the strait daily, according to data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration. Its closure significantly elevates the risk of energy price spikes and broader economic instability.

Starmer also conveyed his condolences to Trump for the loss of American service personnel in the ongoing conflict in the region.

Separate discussions were also held between Starmer and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. Both leaders acknowledged the impact of the Strait of Hormuz closure on international shipping and agreed to continue the dialogue during a scheduled meeting tomorrow, alongside other bilateral matters.
