Broncos Assistant Coach Resigns Amidst Internal Tensions and State of Origin Snub
BRISBANE, Australia – The Brisbane Broncos are reeling after the sudden resignation of assistant coach Ben Te’o on Tuesday, a move described as “shocking and disappointing” by CEO Dave Donaghy. The departure comes amidst reports of a heated disagreement with head coach Michael Maguire and a thwarted opportunity for Te’o to join the Queensland Maroons coaching staff.
The Broncos, last year’s NRL premiers, have faced a turbulent start to the 2026 season, with the Te’o situation adding to existing challenges. According to sources, the rift between Te’o and Maguire stemmed from a disagreement over defensive strategies following Brisbane’s victory over the Melbourne Storm on Friday. News Corp reported a “heated altercation” took place at a dinner prior to the match.
Adding to the complexity, Te’o was reportedly approached by Queensland Maroons coach Billy Slater to fill a vacant assistant coach position. However, the Broncos blocked the move, citing the existing presence of Brisbane staff members already involved with the Maroons setup. Sources indicate Te’o was also disappointed at being prevented from continuing his role as coach of the Queensland under-19s team.
Donaghy confirmed he was surprised by Te’o’s decision to resign during a conversation on Monday. “I was very surprised that I was having that conversation yesterday. I think we all were,” he said, adding that Maguire was also taken aback. He emphasized respecting Te’o’s decision to step away.
The Broncos are now navigating another off-field distraction, following recent contract negotiations with star forward Payne Haas and a public disagreement with former captain Gorden Tallis. Tallis, a prominent media personality, recently raised concerns about injured captain Adam Reynolds’ appearance on a Sydney-based sports program shortly after sustaining an injury, leading to the Broncos removing his name from a conference room at their headquarters.
Despite the ongoing issues, Donaghy expressed confidence in head coach Michael Maguire. “We brought Madge in to do a specific role and I don’t think it can be questioned that he’s done that role,” he stated.
Te’o, who played 96 NRL games for the Broncos, had been credited with bringing a tougher edge to the team since joining the coaching staff before the 2025 season. His departure leaves a void as the Broncos attempt to defend their premiership title.
The situation underscores the intense pressures within the NRL and the challenges faced by clubs in managing player and coaching staff dynamics. The Broncos will need to quickly address the coaching vacancy and refocus on their on-field performance as the season progresses.
