Tel Aviv Launches Bidding for Ambitious $50 Billion Metro Project

TEL AVIV, Israel – Israel has initiated the bidding process for the construction of a comprehensive metro system in Tel Aviv, a project estimated to cost $50 billion and poised to become one of the country’s most significant infrastructure undertakings. The announcement, made Tuesday, signals a major step forward in addressing chronic traffic congestion and improving public transportation in the densely populated coastal metropolis.

The planned metro will comprise three lines spanning approximately 150 kilometers (90 miles) across the greater Tel Aviv area, also known as Gush Dan, home to over four million residents – roughly 40 percent of Israel’s population. The NTA – Metropolitan Mass Transit Systems Ltd, the state-run company overseeing the project, anticipates the system will eventually carry two million passengers daily.

Representatives from numerous international infrastructure firms attended an inaugural event where they were presented with details necessary to qualify for participation in the government-funded project.

“This is a national undertaking that will change the face of the country,” stated Itamar Ben-Meir, CEO of NTA, highlighting the project’s importance in alleviating road congestion and reducing traffic accidents.

The metro is envisioned to work in conjunction with Tel Aviv’s existing light rail network. Currently, one light rail line is operational, with two additional lines under construction, extending the total light rail system to over 90 kilometers (56 miles).

While the current target for the metro’s operational launch is 2037, NTA representatives acknowledged that deadlines for large-scale public transit projects are frequently subject to change. The pre-qualification stage for the project, valued at approximately NIS 65 billion (US$17-20 billion), has now begun, according to the NTA.

The launch of the bidding process follows a pre-qualification phase and underscores Israel’s commitment to investing in modern infrastructure to support its growing population and economy. The NTA’s vision is to establish a mass transit system that becomes the preferred choice for residents of the Tel Aviv metropolitan area, driving economic growth and strengthening the region’s social fabric.
