Search Intensifies for Missing Mother of ‘Today’ Show Host, Community Rallies in Support
Tucson, Arizona – As the search for 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie, mother of “Today” co-host Savannah Guthrie, nears the two-month mark, investigators are appealing directly to those who may know her whereabouts, while her family pleads for renewed public attention. The case has gripped the Tucson community, sparking widespread efforts to aid in the search and offering support to the Guthrie family.
Guthrie was last seen on the evening of January 31 after having dinner with family. She was reported missing February 1 when she failed to attend a scheduled church meeting. Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos, leading the investigation, has affirmed his department’s approach, stating he has “no regrets” about the initial actions taken.
“I stand by my team’s efforts,” Nanos said, according to reporting by News 4 Tucson. He issued a direct plea to anyone involved in Guthrie’s disappearance: “Just give her up. Let her go. Take her to a clinic, a hospital. Drop her off. Just let her go.”
Authorities have released doorbell camera footage showing a masked individual near Guthrie’s home in the Catalina Foothills on the night she disappeared. Investigators are currently focusing on digital evidence, including cellphone records and surveillance videos, but no arrests have been made.
The Guthrie family, in a recent Instagram post, urged the public to revisit any potentially relevant information. “Please consult camera footage, journal notes, text messages, observations, or conversations that in retrospect may hold significance,” the family wrote. They highlighted the evenings of January 31, the early morning hours of February 1, and even January 11 as critical timelines, suggesting previously released video of a masked person at Guthrie’s home weeks before her disappearance could be significant.
The family believes the key to finding Nancy lies within the Tucson and Southern Arizona community. “Someone knows something. It’s possible a member of this community has information that they do not even realize is significant,” they stated.
The disappearance has resonated deeply within Tucson, where neighbors, colleagues, and strangers have organized vigils, offered tips, and left flowers and messages of hope. A growing shrine of tributes has sprung up outside Guthrie’s home, visited recently by Savannah Guthrie and other family members.
Nancy Guthrie is remembered by former colleagues as a quiet but influential figure in Southern Arizona, particularly for her work in public health, education, and journalism. Jacqueline Sharkey, a former University of Arizona professor, described her as “this quiet leader who was so effective without ever working at it.” Others recalled her instrumental role in saving the University of Arizona’s poison information center, gathering over 20,000 signatures before the internet era to ensure its survival.
The community’s response extends beyond organized searches. Neighbors in the Catalina Foothills are actively reviewing surveillance footage and sharing information with law enforcement, and some are considering reviving a neighborhood watch program. Melanie, a resident inspired by previous missing person cases like those of Laci Peterson and Natalee Holloway, has begun crafting and distributing yellow ribbons of hope, now being worn by staff at El Charro, a Tucson restaurant Guthrie frequented.
Ray Flores, president of Flores Concepts, which owns El Charro, said the case struck a chord with his staff after they realized it was “not just a simple lost person issue.” He recalled the close bond between Guthrie and her daughters during a recent visit to the restaurant.
A reward exceeding $1 million is being offered for information leading to Nancy Guthrie’s safe return. Anyone with information is urged to contact the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI or submit a tip to law enforcement.
The Pima County Sheriff’s Department continues to lead the investigation, with support from the FBI. Sheriff Nanos recently addressed concerns regarding the timeline of events, according to reporting by KOLD News 13, reaffirming his commitment to finding Nancy Guthrie.
