Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s Supreme Leader, Dies After Reported Israeli Strike

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the supreme leader of Iran for 36 years, has died following reported Israeli attacks with U.S. support, state media confirmed Saturday. He was 86.

The death of Khamenei marks the end of an era for the Islamic Republic, leaving a power vacuum and raising questions about the future trajectory of the nation. President Trump announced the news on social media, stating Khamenei “could not avoid U.S. intelligence and surveillance.”

Khamenei ascended to the position of supreme leader in 1989, succeeding Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the founder of the Islamic Republic. While lacking the religious prestige of his predecessor, Khamenei consolidated power over decades, becoming a central figure in Iran’s domestic and foreign policy.

During his tenure, Khamenei maintained a staunchly anti-U.S. and anti-Israel stance, overseeing the development of Iran’s nuclear program and bolstering support for regional proxies like Hezbollah in Lebanon and Hamas in the Gaza Strip. He also oversaw a significant expansion of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ economic and political influence.

“Ayatollah Khamenei was a man with strategic patience and was able to calculate a few steps ahead,” said Ali Vaez, director of the Iran Project at the International Crisis Group. “He built up Iran’s defensive policies, such as developing proxies…to deter a direct attack on Iranian soil.”

However, Khamenei’s leadership was also marked by internal repression. Human rights organizations estimate that thousands of Iranian citizens were killed under his rule, including over 7,000 during protests that began in late December 2025, according to the Human Rights Activists News Agency.

In recent years, Iran faced increasing economic hardship, fueled by Western sanctions and internal mismanagement. Negotiations with the U.S. over the nuclear program stalled, and tensions escalated following attacks by Iran-backed groups on regional targets.

A turning point came in June 2025, when the U.S. launched airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities. This was followed by a series of escalating conflicts involving Israel and Iran, as well as Iran’s regional proxies. Israel’s strikes against weapons shipments in Syria weakened the Assad regime, which fell in December 2024.

Analysts suggest Khamenei underestimated the resolve of the U.S. and Israel. “He always assumed that he could play for time,” said Sanam Vakil, an Iran expert at Chatham House. “What he really didn’t understand is that the world around Iran had very much changed.”

The succession process remains unclear. CNN reported there is “no clear successor” to Khamenei. His death leaves Iran at a critical juncture, facing economic challenges, regional instability, and an uncertain political future.
