Lavrov Calls for De-escalation as Iran Conflict Disrupts Travel

Moscow – Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has urged de-escalation in the Middle East following recent exchanges of fire between Iran and Gulf states, as the conflict increasingly impacts international travel. Lavrov made the appeal during a phone call with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Tuesday, according to the Russian Foreign Ministry.

The call followed an agreement by Russian President Vladimir Putin to convey security concerns from several Gulf states to Tehran. These concerns stem from retaliatory strikes launched by Iran in recent days.

Moscow is navigating a delicate diplomatic path, maintaining close ties with both Iran and the Gulf monarchies as it faces increasing isolation from Western nations following its military actions in Ukraine. Putin has sought to strengthen partnerships in the Middle East as a result.

During the conversation with Araghchi, Lavrov emphasized the importance of protecting civilians and civilian infrastructure throughout the region. He reaffirmed Russia’s stance against the use of force and in favor of de-escalation.

The recent escalation – beginning with attacks on Iran on Saturday and followed by Iranian counterattacks – has prompted several countries to close their airspace, causing widespread flight cancellations. The disruptions are particularly acute for Russian tourists, with Russia’s Association of Tour Operators estimating around 50,000 Russian citizens are currently stranded in the United Arab Emirates.

The airspace closures represent the largest disruption to global travel since the COVID-19 pandemic, highlighting the far-reaching consequences of the escalating tensions.
