Three U.S. service members were killed and five seriously wounded Sunday in Iran’s response to joint U.S.-Israeli strikes, marking a significant escalation in regional tensions. The casualties, members of an Army sustainment unit based in Kuwait, occurred as Iranian forces launched counterattacks while U.S. military operations continued against targets within Iran.
President Donald Trump addressed the nation Sunday, expressing grief for the fallen soldiers, whom he described as “true American patriots.” However, he also cautioned that further American deaths are likely. “Sadly, there will likely be more before it ends,” Trump stated in a video statement.
The attacks follow a wave of strikes initiated Saturday, dubbed “Operation Epic Fury,” targeting military and government sites across Iran. The U.S. and Israel announced they had hit dozens of locations, including ballistic missile facilities, communication centers, and air defense systems. U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) reported sinking Iranian naval vessels as part of the operation.
CENTCOM refuted Iranian claims of a higher U.S. casualty count and denied reports of damage to a U.S. Navy ship or significant damage to American bases.
The conflict stems from the reported killing of Iranian spiritual leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and other high-ranking officials in U.S.-Israeli airstrikes earlier Saturday. U.S. intelligence had been tracking Khamenei for months, and the strike was timed to maximize impact, eliminating Defense Minister Gen. Aziz Nasirzadeh, Revolutionary Guard Corps head Gen. Mohammad Pakpour, and Khamenei’s defense adviser, Ali Shamkhani.
Several other U.S. troops sustained minor injuries, including shrapnel wounds and concussions, and are expected to return to duty, according to CENTCOM. The military command noted the “situation is fluid” and is withholding the names of the deceased pending notification of next of kin.
Iran’s retaliatory strikes have extended beyond U.S. and Israeli targets, also impacting nearby countries including Cyprus, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar.

The escalating conflict raises concerns about wider regional instability and the potential for prolonged military engagement. The U.S. government has vowed to avenge the deaths of its service members, with Trump promising to deliver a “punishing blow” to those responsible.
