Iran : Missiles vers Diego Garcia, menace sur l’Europe ?

Iran Targets UK-US Base in Diego Garcia, Raising Fears of Escalation

Diego Garcia, British Indian Ocean Territory – Iran launched a missile attack targeting the joint US-UK military base on Diego Garcia, a strategically important island in the Indian Ocean, according to reports confirmed Saturday. The attack, which British officials condemned as “reckless,” underscores escalating tensions in the Middle East.

While the missiles reportedly failed to hit the base, the attempt itself has sparked concerns that Iran may be developing capabilities to strike targets further afield, potentially including locations in Europe.

“The attack on Diego Garcia is the first instance of the demonstration, albeit unsuccessful,” said Mark Wallace, former US ambassador and CEO of United Against Nuclear Iran, in a statement to The Sun.

The base, located approximately 4,000 kilometers (2,500 miles) from Iran, serves as a key airbase and logistical hub, housing around 2,500 personnel, primarily American. It is equipped with a large airfield, fuel storage facilities, and radar installations.

Military analysts suggest the attack may indicate Iran is attempting to extend the range of its ballistic missiles. Previously estimated at a maximum range of 2,000km, the distance to Diego Garcia suggests a potential advancement in Iranian capabilities.

“The intermediate-range ballistic missile arsenal the IRGC Aerospace Forces has is largely untested…for the distance and payload we just saw,” explained Jonathan Hackett, a veteran of the US Marine Corps special operations. He cautioned that Iran may attempt to modify existing missiles to achieve greater range, potentially by reducing warhead size and increasing fuel capacity, though the reliability of such modifications remains uncertain.

The attempted strike comes amid heightened regional instability. The UK has authorized the US to use British bases for “defensive operations” aimed at degrading Iranian missile sites, a move that has drawn criticism from Tehran. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned that Iran would “exercise its right to self-defence” in response.

Kemi Badenoch, a British cabinet minister, has accused opposition leader Keir Starmer of a “cover-up” regarding the Iranian attack, alleging a lack of transparency surrounding the incident.

Former US President Donald Trump has also weighed in, stating the UK “should have acted a lot faster” in granting the US access to its bases.

The incident follows weeks of Iranian disruption to shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and escalating attacks on neighboring Gulf states. The Iranian government has also issued threats targeting tourist destinations, raising concerns about the safety of international travelers.

The Ministry of Defence has described the attack as “reckless” and reaffirmed its commitment to defending British interests and allies in the region, with RAF jets continuing to patrol the area.
