Escalating Tensions: Israel Strikes Iran and Lebanon as US Targets Iranian Assets

BEIRUT, Lebanon – A significant escalation of conflict unfolded across the Middle East early Friday, with Israel launching airstrikes on both Iran and Lebanon, while the United States reportedly targeted an Iranian drone carrier at sea. The rapid series of events has heightened fears of a wider regional war.
Israeli strikes hit the Iranian capital, Tehran, and Beirut’s southern suburbs, a stronghold of the Hezbollah militant group. Lebanese state media reported strikes on several towns in southern Lebanon, including Srifa, Aita al-Shaab, Touline, Sawana and Majdal Selm, as well as Dours at dawn. The Israeli military confirmed strikes on Hezbollah infrastructure in the Dahiyeh district of Beirut, warning residents to evacuate beforehand.
The exchange follows a period of heightened tension between Israel and Iran, and comes as former U.S. President Donald Trump urged Iranian Kurdish forces in Iraq to launch attacks against Iran, according to Reuters.
Hezbollah claimed responsibility for earlier strikes targeting Israeli forces, stating they were in retaliation for previous Israeli attacks on Lebanon. The Iran-backed group said it launched rockets and artillery shells at border positions.
Meanwhile, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards announced missile launches targeting Tel Aviv, according to state news agency IRNA.
The United States also appears to be directly involved in the escalating conflict. Reports indicate U.S. forces targeted an Iranian drone carrier at sea, intensifying a campaign against Iranian naval assets.
NATO has responded to the unfolding crisis by strengthening its “ballistic missile defence posture,” after a missile launched by Iran was shot down near Turkey, a NATO member.
The situation remains fluid and volatile. The series of strikes and counter-strikes underscores the fragility of peace in the Middle East and raises concerns about the potential for further escalation. The region, encompassing the Arabian Peninsula, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, the Levant, and Turkey, is already grappling with numerous conflicts and geopolitical challenges. [1]
