Tensions escalate in the Gulf as Iran and Israel exchange attacks
KUWAIT CITY/TEHRAN – A surge in regional hostilities saw Iran launch missile and drone attacks targeting its Gulf neighbors Friday, while Israel responded with further air strikes on Iranian soil. The escalating conflict raises concerns about a wider regional war and a potential global energy crisis.
Kuwait’s largest oil refinery was struck by Iranian drones, causing significant blazes. A warehouse in Bahrain was also reportedly hit. Iranian state media reported that sixteen cargo ships anchored in the Gulf had been damaged, with reports of vessels being set ablaze.
Israel confirmed it had launched additional air attacks against Iran, but stated it was avoiding targeting energy infrastructure. Powerful explosions were reported in Tehran, the Iranian capital.
The attacks come amid heightened tensions following an initial Iranian assault earlier in the week, prompting international calls for de-escalation. Experts warn the current conflict poses the “greatest ever energy threat,” potentially disrupting global supplies and impacting the world economy.
The situation is being closely monitored by international governments and organizations. The potential for further escalation remains high, with the conflict marking its third week.
