Ghana Seeks to Boost Economy by Processing More Cocoa Domestically

Accra, Ghana – The Ghanaian government is implementing new measures aimed at revitalizing its cocoa sector, a cornerstone of the national economy. The initiative focuses on increasing domestic processing of cocoa beans, rather than exporting them as a raw commodity.

The health of Ghana’s cocoa industry has a direct impact on the nation’s wealth, prompting the government to seek ways to maximize its economic benefit. Currently, much of Ghana’s cocoa is exported for processing into chocolate and other products abroad.

These new plans signal a shift towards value-added production within Ghana itself. The Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), a government-controlled institution responsible for cocoa pricing, is central to these efforts.

The move comes as cocoa farmers in both Ghana and neighboring Ivory Coast face economic hardship despite rising chocolate prices, according to recent reports. The crisis highlights the need for both countries to secure a greater share of the profits generated from their cocoa production.
