FN America Advances Prototype Grenade Launcher for U.S. Army’s Precision Engagement System
WASHINGTON – FN America has completed initial function testing of its MTL-30 30mm grenade launcher, a key component in the U.S. Army’s effort to modernize infantry capabilities for engaging targets in complex environments. The testing, conducted in collaboration with Strategic Sciences, focused on integrating a new multi-function muzzle device onto the launcher platform.
The MTL-30 is being developed under a $2 million Prototype Project Opportunity Notice (PPON) awarded to FN America in 2025, following its display at the Association of the U.S. Army (AUSA) annual conference. The Army’s Precision Grenadier System aims to provide soldiers with a controllable weapon capable of hitting targets behind cover or within challenging battlefield conditions.
“We’re excited to share continued progress in our development and testing,” FN America stated. The company emphasized its commitment to a data-driven, soldier-informed approach to refining both the launcher and its associated ammunition.
The MTL-30 occupies a niche between traditional low-velocity grenade launchers and heavier automatic systems. Its medium-velocity 30mm munitions are designed to offer increased range, accuracy, and impact while remaining portable for infantry units. The multi-function muzzle device tested is intended to optimize weapon handling and performance characteristics, analyzing recoil and system compatibility.
Precision grenade launchers like the MTL-30 are intended to give small units the ability to engage concealed targets without relying on heavier artillery support. The semi-automatic operation of the MTL-30 allows for rapid follow-up shots while maintaining control for individual operators.
The Army’s PPON framework allows for evaluation of emerging technologies through industry development and testing before committing to large-scale acquisition. This approach allows systems to mature technically and incorporate soldier feedback early in the development process.
FN America designs and manufactures the MTL-30 in the United States. The launcher is intended to complement modern infantry operations by enabling engagements against targets previously difficult to reach.
