Dubai Feels the Chill as Expats Depart Amid Regional Tensions

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — A sense of unease is settling over Dubai as footage circulating online depicts a stark contrast to the city’s typically bustling beaches. Videos shared by Belarusian news outlet Nexta show stretches of coastline almost entirely deserted, a visual representation of a growing exodus of expatriates amid escalating regional tensions stemming from the conflict involving Iran.

The shift comes after Iran targeted Gulf states in retaliation for joint Israeli-US military actions. While Dubai has long been marketed as a stable haven in the Middle East, specializing in tourism, business, retail, and finance, recent attacks have prompted a reassessment of that perception. Authorities confirmed Wednesday that two Iranian drones struck near Dubai International Airport, wounding four people – two Ghanaian nationals, one Bangladeshi national, and an Indian national with moderate injuries.

The United Arab Emirates has seen six deaths and 122 injuries since February 28 due to attacks linked to the wider conflict. Iran’s recent announcement that it would begin targeting banks and financial institutions in the Middle East has further heightened concerns, particularly in Dubai, a major international financial hub.

The impact on Dubai’s economy is already becoming apparent. The Middle East could see an 11% drop in tourism this year, resulting in an estimated $34 billion loss in spending, according to Reuters.

The UK’s Foreign Office reports that approximately 45,000 British nationals have left the Gulf region since March 1, out of an estimated 200,000 present at the start of the conflict. Two charter flights carrying British citizens home have departed from Dubai in recent days, with increasing numbers of commercial flights also leaving the region. 32 flights landed in the UK on Monday alone.

Dubai’s appeal has historically rested on its tax-free environment, luxury lifestyle, and favorable climate, attracting a wealthy international population including celebrities and social media influencers like Rio Ferdinand, Kate Ferdinand, Jamelia, and Laura Anderson. However, the current climate is prompting many to reconsider their long-term prospects in the city.

The situation remains fluid, and the long-term effects on Dubai’s economy and social fabric are yet to be seen.
