Independent Congressional Candidate Alleges Media Bias, Cites Lack of Coverage

Irvine, California – Eric J. Troutman, an independent candidate vying for California’s 47th Congressional District seat, alleges a deliberate lack of coverage from mainstream media outlets, attributing it to a fear of an independent challenger. Troutman, a lawyer known for his work combating robocalls, claims the Orange County Register and other news organizations are prioritizing coverage of candidates affiliated with established political parties.

“Bias. Pure and simple. And it’s so obvious,” Troutman stated in a January 29th press release. He specifically pointed to profiles published by Orange County Register reporter Kaitlyn Schallhorn featuring his opponents, Michael Maxsenti and Hunter Garcia Miranda. Maxsenti was described as a supporter of Robert F. Kennedy Jr., while Miranda was profiled for her criticism of her own party’s policies.

A search conducted by NewsBlaze, and verified by Nouvelles-du-monde.com, revealed no results on the Orange County Register’s website for searches including “Eric Troutman,” “Eric J. Troutman,” “Troutman Amin,” “AmericaDeservesToWin,” “TroutmanForAmerica,” and the campaign email address, [email protected]. Internal searches of the Orange County Register also yielded no results. While search tools aren’t infallible, the absence of coverage supports Troutman’s claims.

Troutman contrasts his perceived lack of attention with his own accomplishments. He asserts he has “stopped billions of robocalls, disrupted the entire legal industry and am literally the most expensive attorney in the history of the world… and not a peep.” He claims his firm’s billing rates exceed $4,000 per hour, and are projected to surpass $6,000 in 2026. These claims, while difficult to independently verify in their entirety, highlight Troutman’s attempt to establish himself as a significant figure worthy of media attention.

The issue of media coverage for independent candidates is a recurring one in the United States. According to a 2022 report by the Pew Research Center, roughly 60% of Americans believe news organizations are biased, and a significant portion express distrust in the media. This distrust, coupled with the financial pressures facing local news outlets, can lead to a focus on established candidates with readily available campaign funding and party support.

Troutman’s campaign boasts a substantial online presence, with over 100,000 subscribers to AmericaDeservesToWin.com and more than 40,000 followers on X (formerly Twitter) with millions of views. He argues this demonstrates a clear public interest in his candidacy.

Efforts to obtain comment from Kaitlyn Schallhorn of the Orange County Register were unsuccessful. World City Press editor Eric Stevenson emailed Schallhorn seeking comment on the Register’s coverage criteria and potential for a Troutman interview, but received no response within 33 hours of the initial inquiry.

The 47th Congressional District, currently represented by Representative Katie Porter, is considered a competitive race. The outcome could influence the balance of power in the House of Representatives. Troutman’s allegations of media bias raise questions about fair representation and access to information for voters in this crucial district. He frames the situation as a broader issue of “mainstream media fear,” suggesting outlets are hesitant to cover a candidate who doesn’t fit neatly into established political narratives.
