Amazon Doubles Down on Spain with €33.7 Billion Investment in Cloud and AI Infrastructure
BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — Amazon is significantly expanding its presence in Spain, announcing Monday an additional €18 billion ($21 billion) investment in data center projects, bringing its total commitment to the country to €33.7 billion through 2035. The move underscores Spain’s growing importance as a hub for cloud computing and artificial intelligence within Europe.
The investment, revealed during the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, will bolster data infrastructure and deliver advanced AI and cloud capabilities across the continent, according to a company statement. This builds upon a previous commitment of €15.7 billion in 2024 to expand data centers in the northeastern region of Aragón.
Amazon anticipates the investment will support nearly 30,000 jobs annually and contribute €31.7 billion to Spain’s GDP. A substantial portion of the new funding will create approximately 1,800 jobs in Aragón, where the company is leveraging the region’s abundant renewable energy sources – including solar and wind power – to power its data centers.
“In a world filled with uncertainty, our country is a safe bet,” Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez posted on X following a meeting with Amazon representatives at the MWC.
While substantial, Amazon’s investment in Spain is part of a larger trend of massive spending by tech giants like Microsoft, Google, and OpenAI on computing infrastructure globally. However, Amazon’s chief global affairs and legal officer, David Zapolsky, emphasized that the increased investment represents “a long-term bet on Spain.”
The expansion comes as European nations grapple with the need for technological sovereignty and concerns about reliance on American companies for cloud services. Currently, Amazon Web Services, Google, and Microsoft dominate the European cloud market, with local alternatives struggling to gain traction. Amazon’s investment in Spain could potentially alleviate some of those concerns by increasing data infrastructure within the European Union.
Amazon also plans to invest €30 million in community programs across Spain through 2035.
