Salsa Legend Willie Colón Dies at 75

New York – Willie Colón, the iconic trombonist, composer, and interpreter of salsa classics like “Idilio” and “Gitana,” has died at age 75 in a New York hospital, his family announced Friday. Colón’s career spanned decades, marked by successful collaborations with vocalists Héctor Lavoe and Rubén Blades, solidifying his place as a pivotal figure in Latin music.

“It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, and renowned musician, Willie Colón,” a family statement read. “He departed peacefully this morning, surrounded by his loving family. While we mourn his absence, we also rejoice in the eternal gift of his music and the cherished memories he created, which will live on forever.”

Born William Anthony Colón Román on April 28, 1950, in the Bronx, Colón rose to prominence in the 1960s and 70s, blending jazz, soul, and traditional Latin rhythms into a distinctive salsa sound. His work with Lavoe produced a string of hits that became anthems of the genre, while his later partnership with Rubén Blades yielded socially conscious and musically innovative albums.

The news of Colón’s death resonated throughout the music world. Puerto Rican superstar Bad Bunny paused his concert in São Paulo, Brazil, to pay tribute. “Today, a legend who contributed to this beautiful and legendary genre has left us,” he told the audience. “The inspiration of many of these great musicians who have left their mark on this earth will never die as long as there are young talents like those here, keeping the music and salsa and all Caribbean rhythms alive.”

Spanish singer Enrique Bunbury also mourned the loss, calling Colón an “absolute master of salsa.” He highlighted the importance of Colón’s early work with Héctor Lavoe and his later collaborations with Rubén Blades as essential listening for Latin music fans. Bunbury referenced a cover version of Colón’s “El día de mi suerte” included on his band Licenciado Cantinas’ album.

Marc Anthony also expressed his gratitude, stating simply: “Maestro, thank you for your legacy. Your music lives on forever. R.I.P. Willie Colón.”

Colón’s influence extended beyond the realm of music. His songs often reflected the experiences of the Puerto Rican diaspora in New York City, giving voice to their struggles and triumphs. His passing represents a significant loss for the Latin music community and beyond.

The family has requested privacy during their time of mourning.
